Shuteen Erdenebaatar Quartet

Shuteen Erdenebaatar, piano / Nils Kugelmann, bass / Valentin Renner, drums / Jakob Manz, saxophone

The young, multi-award-winning pianist and composer Shuteen Erdenebaatar grew up as a classical musician in the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar. After her classical training, she yearned to explore the world of jazz and finally came to Munich in 2018 to study jazz. A key moment. Here she was able to find and cultivate her own musical signature.

On her debut album with her quartet "Rising Sun" (15 September 2023, Motema Music), Shuteen Erdenebaatar combines her classical piano and composition skills with the boundless freedom of jazz. Her classical foundation is unmistakable throughout, which is evident in her technical brilliance, stylistic finesse and the thematic structure of her compositions. Enriched with expressive harmonies and rhythmic variability, Erdenebaatar's memorable melodies serve as a framework in which her formidable band can spread out.

The quartet consists of the young Munich bassist, the rhythmically and melodically outstanding all-rounder Nils Kugelmann, described by the Süddeutsche Zeitung as "one of the best in his field", and the powerful and soulful drumming of Valentin Renner. The melodically and rhythmically sophisticated inventions of alto-saxophone and recorder prodigy, Jakob Manz completes their sound alongside Erdenebaatar's highly personal and engaging pianism.
