Born in the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar, composer and pianist Shuteen Erdenebaatar creates a unique sound with her yearning melodies enriched with deep and expressive harmonies and rhythms. Following her classical studies in Mongolia, her love for jazz
brought her to Germany, where she was able to cultivate her own voice. This voice is unmistakably present, and her classical foundation is unmistakable throughout, which is evident in her technical brilliance, stylistic finesse and the thematic structure of her compositions.
After her debut album ''Rising Sun'', which was released in September 2023 by the renowned label Motéma Music from New York, she was quickly recognized and celebrated as one of the most promising rising stars of the European jazz scene. This album with her quartet has caused a sensation in the press and among audiences, prompting Shuteen Erdenebaatar to perform internationally in countries such as Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, France, the Czech Republic, China, Mongolia and Iceland. Among them are invitations to the most significant and renowned festivals in Europe such as the North Sea Jazz Festival, Jazzahead!, Jazz Baltica, Transition Festival, Reykjavik Jazz Festival or Rockit Festival.
Her quartet is made up of award-winning young musicians and accomplished bandleaders on their own right. Alongside the exceptional bassist Nils Kugelmann and alto saxophonist and recorder prodigy Jakob Manz, the dynamic and creative drumming of Amir Bresler rounds off the ensemble sound together with the very personal and engaging pianism of Erdenebaatar.
The quartet was awarded the prestigious German Jazz Award 2024 in the “Ensemble of the Year” category and in the same year received the biggest Mongolian cultural award “Mungun Mod” in the “Album of the Year” category.
Between Mongolian soul and European sophistication, her music is inspired by encounters and journeys, which gives each piece a personal touch and leads the audience through the evening.
