Oud, Vocal
Dhafer Youssef is a visionary Oud master, vocalist, and composer whose music transcends genres. Growing up in a family of muezzins, he discovered his vocal potential through Quranic recitation and early experimentation with sound in his village. Introduced to the Oud and contemporary grooves in his youth, Youssef trained in Tunis and Vienna, where jazz, Indian music, and multicultural influences shaped his distinctive style.
Since his debut album Malak (1999), he has fused Mediterranean traditions with jazz, electronic, and global sounds, creating critically acclaimed works including Electric Sufi, Digital Prophecy, Divine Shadows, Abu Nawas Rhapsody, and Birds Requiem. A celebrated collaborator, he has performed with artists such as Nguyên Lê, Paolo Fresu, Zakir Hussain, and Dave Holland, and composed scores for films including Black Gold and The Amazing Spider-Man.
Praised for his inventive approach to the Oud and voice, Youssef is recognized as a leading figure in contemporary music, seamlessly blending Eastern and Western traditions while redefining the possibilities of his instrument.
